If you’ve been eyeing a Rivian but couldn’t quite justify the six-figure price tag of the R1S, your patience just paid off. The Rivian R2 officially broke cover at SXSW 2026, and it’s exactly what the brand needs to go mainstream. It’s a midsize electric SUV that keeps the rugged, outdoorsy DNA of its big brothers but shrinks it down into a package that’s easier to park and way easier on your bank account.
The first version hitting the dirt is the R2 Performance, dropping this spring for $57,990. For that, you’re getting a dual-motor AWD beast with 656 hp that rockets to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. If you jump on the limited “Launch Package,” Rivian is throwing in exclusive Launch Green paint, a green anodized key fob, and a lifetime subscription to their Autonomy+ hands-free driving system. It even keeps the “adventure” specs legit with 9.6 inches of ground clearance and a rear “drop glass” window that rolls completely into the tailgate—perfect for sticking long surfboards out the back.
Inside, it’s all about utility, featuring fold-flat seats (front and back) for car camping and a massive 90.1 cubic feet of total storage. Charging is also a breeze thanks to a native NACS port, giving you instant access to over 21,000 Tesla Superchargers. If you aren’t in a rush, a $53,990 Premium trim arrives late this year, followed by a $45,000 base model in 2027. Reservations are open now for $100, and with first deliveries expected by June.
